In the north of Santander, in the municipality of Salazar de las Palmas, among all the citizens and through the passing of generations, the legend of Juana Naranja is known. There are two versions of this legend that try to explain the origin of the name of this emblematic place in this municipality.
The first version says that a woman named Juana de Ortices fell in love with a land where the Ortices Lagoon is located today; Juana received an inheritance, which consisted of some golden oranges, tobacco, and aguardiente; so she decided to speak with the owner of this land, but he did not agree to sell it. However, she would do anything to keep the land, so she got the owner drunk, gave him a golden orange in exchange, and thus she kept the land, where she dug a hole to fill it with water to give to the animals around, which over time became the great lagoon it is today.
