One of these women was known as “the Magician” who set up a business in which she supposedly resolved questions about love, arranged and ended marriages, playing cards, reading palm lines, and all these tricks with which she could deceive those who were skeptical and believed in magic. She reached a point where she expanded her business to such an extent that she opened a house of entertainment; there she conquered those innocents, cleaning out the pockets of the high commands that represented the King of Spain, without leaving aside the wealthiest “criollos.”
It is said that there were so many malicious acts committed by the woman, that they cannot be enumerated. She taught young women to avoid motherhood; she brought ruin to many homes; and as a consequence came depravity, venereal diseases and abandoned wives. At her deathbed, is said her house had a horrible smell permeating it forever.
